Personally I think this course should be compulsory for anyone that wants to ride around traffic. I’m sure it would reduce accidents and also the frustration of driving around cyclists that do the wrong thing, possibly without realizing. I’ve started cycling to work as of this Monday so the timing was perfect.
Kerrie BuhagiarI signed up to the city cycling course after returning from a long stint of living in Edinburgh, Scotland. After being accustomed to cycling in a city of half a million people the thought of negotiating the streets and roads of Sydney by bike seemed completely overwhelming and scary! But I was determined not to spend my commute in traffic behind the wheel of a car, and also wanted to do my bit for the environment, so decided to sign up to the course to increase my confidence levels.
Signing up to the course was easy and all done via the web. Upon arrival we were introduced to our instructors and covered some basic theory to teach the skills of awareness and assertive riding before getting on our bikes. Some basic safety skills were covered at the instruction centre to make sure all cyclists had the ability to safely cycle on the road. It was a rainy day but there was plenty of space undercover where we undertook the drills. The instructors were really friendly and knowledgeable and ensured that we all had plenty of tips and techniques before we set off. We next decided to brave the weather and headed off on a convoy through the streets of inner Sydney, escorted by the 2 instructors who ran through further drills with us in different environments based on the traffic and local road conditions. These increased in difficulty and complexity throughout the day and we were lucky to find the rain held off as well! Our confidence grew, and I felt much more comfortable as the day progressed, even cycling in heavy traffic conditions which had felt so alien to me before.
I now feel much more confident to cycle on a range of roads and in different traffic conditions and feel like I'm much better equipped to anticipate other traffic on the road. I'm regularly commuting the 5kms to work and feeling much happier and healthier as a result.
Lucy WoodI have wanted a bicycle for quite some time but didn’t have anywhere to store it. My husband was working most weekends and would take the car to work so my little boy and I were stuck with walking or taking public transport. As an alternative to the bus (which we took every week day) I began looking for a bike with a seat on the back for him. I was a bit daunted by the thought of trawling through eBay and was very fortunate to pick up a 2nd hand bargain in my local bike shop. My little boy totally adores sitting at the back and I thoroughly enjoyed the first few months of riding each weekend. We had so much more freedom and at last were able to meet with friends without a logistical nightmare on connecting buses and trains.
Through riding we connected more with friends, got heaps of fresh air and people smiled at us as we went past (the cute boy on the back of my bike is what they are smiling at… but it’s a lovely feeling). There was a problem though, I was mostly riding on the pavement, as I felt very fearful of the roads and traffic and that I could potentially be putting my little boy in danger
I was really impressed with the city cycling course. The progressive material really aided our learning and confidence. The instructors were really engaging and cared about us! I have been to many training courses of a different nature over the years (mostly work) and have to say they can often disappoint. I thought the plan and delivery was outstanding. It was so clearly structured – e.g. setting the scene, asking questions, demonstrating the drill, our turn to practice etc… It sounds simple but even the fact that the instructors were really clear on their instructions and expectations made such a difference. It was very professional, I learnt a great deal and it was fun too!
I now ride with more confidence, both on the road and bike paths. I ride safer and smarter! Because I enjoy cycling so much my husband has since bought a bike for himself! We now have more adventurous family time, get so much more exercise and have such fun outings. We get home tired but so happy. I even cycle to work a couple of times a week. I think cycling has changed our lives!
Jorieke van der SteltJorieke is Dutch and is currently studying at the University of Sydney. Although no stranger to cycling she was intimidated by the level and intensity of Sydney traffic. She then learnt about the ‘Cycling in the City courses’ offered freely by the City of Sydney which are run every Saturday and Sunday morning. Since completing the course her confidence and comfort has improved greatly. The skills she learnt about road positioning and how to engage with other road users have been invaluable and kept her safe. As she says “I use what I learnt on the cycling course every single day!
